At least five residents and one employee at Wind Crest retirement community in Highlands Ranch have tested positive for COVID-19, according to an April 7 statement from the community.

“We have notified and instructed anyone who has been in close contact with these residents or employees to remain in their respective homes for a 14-day period, to self-monitor for symptoms and to call their primary care physician...if they develop symptoms,” according to the emailed statement.

All residents were asked to stay in their respective homes beginning April 1, following Gov. Jared Polis' stay-at-home order, which went into effect March 26.

"The affected residents and employee are receiving appropriate care and treatment," according to the statement. "We are closely monitoring those who live and work at our community so we can take immediate action if needed."

Wind Crest did not provide details on the statuses of the residents who have tested positive.

The community has closed all gathering areas, including dining rooms, the fitness center, the salon and the pool. Staff is delivering meals, medications and other items directly to residents, according to the statement. The community is also closed to visitors.

As of April 7, there were 219 cases in Douglas County and 72 in Highlands Ranch.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment released the names and locations of at least nine other nursing homes in Colorado that are facing outbreaks of COVID-19, including facilities in Weld, Larimer, El Paso, Chaffee, Arapahoe, Adams and Jefferson counties. The list, released March 27, comes after The Denver Post filed a public records request for the facility names.

Older adults and people with serious underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk for severe illnesses caused by COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making outbreaks at senior living facilities particularly concerning.
