Following a conviction for the murder of an international student studying at the University of Utah, Austin Jeffrey Boutain has returned to Jefferson County to face charges in the death of a man in Golden in October 2017.

Boutain, 25, arrived in Golden on July 17 after extradition from Utah and is being held in the Jefferson County jail without bond. Boutain's first appearance took place on July 19.

Boutain faces 19 counts of charges from the First Judicial District for suspicion of murdering 63-year-old Mitchell Bradford Ingle. Ingle had a monthlong lease at the Clear Creek RV Park in Golden at the time of the incident.

Boutain's Colorado charges include first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated motor vehicle theft. Extradition for his wife, Kathleen Boutain, 25, is pending. She faces 20 counts of charges from the First Judicial District.

Golden Police were dispatched to the Clear Creek RV Park about a half hour past midnight on Oct. 31, 2017, to do a welfare check on Ingle, per a request from the Salt Lake City Police. Salt Lake City police was investigating the murder of ChenWei Guo, a Chinese student studying pre-computer science at the University of Utah. In their investigation, they discovered a green 2000 Ford pickup truck with Colorado license plates registered to Ingle.

When Golden Police arrived to the RV park in Golden, they discovered Ingle deceased inside, and preliminary investigations indicated that he had been dead for a few days.

According to the arrest affidavit, the Boutains took a bus from Long Beach, California, to Colorado sometime in September 2017. They set up a tent in downtown Denver, and eventually made their way to Lakewood, then Golden, where they lived in a tent under a bridge off Sixth Avenue for a couple of weeks. Austin Boutain's first meeting with Ingle was at Ingle's trailer at Clear Creek RV Park, 1401 10th St., in Golden. Boutain had sold Ingle some marijuana, according to the arrest affidavit.

According to the arrest affidavit, investigators believe that on Oct. 27, Kathleen and Austin Boutain had another encounter with Ingle, and eventually the three of them went into Ingle's trailer to smoke marijuana and drink whiskey. Austin Boutain told police that Ingle made sexual comments to his wife, which angered him. The married couple began to plot robbery after Ingle had gone to bed, and at about 9:30 p.m., Austin Boutain told Kathleen Boutain that he was going to kill Ingle at 10 p.m.

The affidavit states that after Austin Boutain killed Ingle with a knife, the couple stole three guns, blankets, clothes, food and money. They headed to Utah in Ingle's green 2000 Ford pickup truck.

Utah's Deseret News newspaper reported that the Boutains had been camping in the foothills above the University of Utah after they fled Colorado. Kathleen Boutain came down from their campsite in the evening of Oct. 30 to call police to report that her husband had assaulted her. She was arrested for possession of narcotics and theft. Austin Boutain was located and taken into custody the next day. He was arrested for attempted carjacking and Guo's murder.

The Deseret News reported that on Sept. 12, 2018, Boutain pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and aggravated kidnapping. He was also convicted of “aggravated assault of an inmate for stabbing another prisoner while in jail, and damaging a jail cell by causing a fire sprinkler to flood his entire cell,” wrote the Deseret News.

As part of the plea deal, Boutain was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to the Deseret News.

The Deseret News reported that “Kathleen Boutain pleaded guilty in May to two counts of theft by receiving stolen property."
