People in need of a mask in Castle Rock can now head over to town hall to pick up free supplies.
The Town of Castle Rock is providing nonmedical, disposable masks to town residents and business owners for free during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Those interested can go to town hall at 100 Wilcox Street between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to pick up masks.
Residents will be allowed two masks for each member of his or her household. Businesses licensed by the town can pick up one box of 50 masks.
Supplies are expected to last through August but could run out sooner depending on demand, according to a town news release.
Assistant Town Manager Kristin Read said as of July 23 the town had enough masks already to begin providing businesses with them and planned to place an initial order of 1,500 masks to help residents. The town would order more masks as needed, she said.
The town council on July 21 directed town staff to launch the initiative after Councilmember Caryn Johnson had advocated for a mask giveaway and education campaign on the use of masks.
The council decided against an education campaign after Gov. Jares Polis issued a statewide mask order requiring Coloradans age 11 and older wear masks in public indoor places. Council decided to move forward still with the mask giveaway.
Read told the town council on July 21 that 30 of 70 businesses the town contacted to expressed interest in masks. As of July 21, Read said disposable masks would cost approximately 50 cents each, or $1,050 for 2,000.
Castle Rock expects to be reimbursed for the expense through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or the CARES Act.
