Classic funk rockers coming to outdoor show

War, a longtime funk rock band, will perform at Hudson Gardens, 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25. Founding member/frontman Lonnie Jordan will be performing with the band. Collaborations

Jennifer Meyerrose and Craig Marshall Smith will open an exhibit, “Meyerrose and Smith: Collaborations” on Aug. 30 at the PACE Center in Parker (20000 Pikes Peak Ave.). Both create abstract paintings and the exhibit will include eight diptychs and four triptychs and it runs through Oct. 30. Parkerarts.org. More next week…

Legal issues

The Colorado Theatre Guild hosts a presentation called “Let’s Talk Legal,” presented by Colorado Lawyers for the Arts, on Aug. 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Co-sponsored by Colorado Business Committee for the Arts and Mizel Arts and Culture Center at the Phillips Social Hall, JCC, 350 S. Dahlia St., Denver. Legal issues an artist might encounter are presented by attorney Dave Ratner, of Creative Law Network. Free for CTG members, $10 for non-members. Affordable Arts

The Eighth Annual Affordable Arts Show will open at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. on Aug. 25 on the West Lawn at Arapahoe Community College, 5900 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton. No item will be priced above $100 and more than 170 artists are scheduled to exhibit their works. Proceeds from the $10 entrance fee will go toward scholarships for ACC students. Since its 2012 beginning, the festival has raised over $102,000!

Free dinner

The monthly free Community Dinner at First Presbyterian Church of Littleton, 1609 W. Littleton Blvd., will be at 6 p.m. on Aug. 27, with a menu of lasagna, green salad, garlic bread, fruit and handheld dessert. 303-798-1389, fpcl.org.

Art space moves west

Long-running artists’ cooperative Core New Art Space has moved to the recognizable pink Pasternack’s Art Hub, 6851 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood, which is its seventh location, according to Littleton artist and active member Michelle Lamb (light rail station mural and more). It becomes a new member of the growing “40 West” Lakewood Arts community. (Colfax is Highway 40.) Core was formerly at Ninth and Santa Fe, where a newly formed gallery has started: D’art Gallery includes at least one artist, Jean Smith, from the former Zip 37 on Navajo.

New musical at Arvada Center

“Bright Star” by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell will play Sept. 6 to 29 at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada. Meredith Kay Clark plays newspaper editor Alice Murphy, who is at the center of the story … The score is described as Americana and bluegrass-infused. Performances: Wednesdays, 1 p.m.; Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Tickets: arvadacenter.org, 720-898-7200.

Colorado Abstract+10: A Survey

In 2009, a handsome art book recorded a survey of works by Colorado’s abstract artists. It was called “Colorado Abstract” by authors Michael Paglia and Mary Voelz Chandler. On Sept. 12, the Arvada Center and Kirkland Museum will collaborate to exhibit two- and three-dimensional artworks by the original artists mentioned plus 10 additional artists working here now. The exhibits run through Nov. 17 at both places. Arvada will exhibit a contemporary survey of works by artists originally included in the book in the main gallery, and the Upper and Theatre Galleries will present additional Colorado artists now working in abstraction. Kirkland will present an exhibit of works created by artists featured in the historical section of the book, tracing history and development of this style in Colorado. Arvada Center is at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., Arvada (admission free) and The Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Arts is at 1201 Bannock St., Denver. (Admission charge for non-members.) Picoult — mark the calendar

Douglas County Libraries presents an evening with popular author Jodi Picoult in conversation with local author Eleanor Brown at CU South Denver, 10035 S. Peoria St., Parker. The event on Sept. 24 will run from 7 to 11 p.m. The $24 ticket will include a paperback, pre-signed copy of “A Spark of Light. Pre-register at DCL.org.
