Colleges, universities taking precautions

As with many institutions across the nation, Denver-area colleges and universities are taking precautions aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. Here is a look at what schools are doing:

Arapahoe Community College

Spring break will be extended through March 30 to give the college time to transition to remote or online classes. Courses that cannot be delivered remotely will be structured to provide social distancing and other responsible precautions. https://www.arapahoe.edu/

Auraria Campus

Auraria Campus includes Community College of Denver, University of Colorado-Denver and Metropolitan State University of Denver. The three colleges are working together on handling shared facilities.

University of Colorado-Denver: The school will remain open during spring break, March 23-27 as it prepares for a transition to online or remote courses. UCD expects to have full implementation of remote teaching and learning by March 30, though some courses may transition sooner. www1.ucdenver.edu/coronavirus

Metropolitan State University of Denver: The school will remain open during spring break as it prepares for a transition to online or remote courses. Metro expects to have full implementation of remote teaching and learning by March 30 and stated that it is likely classes will not take place on campus for the remainder of spring semester. www.msudenver.edu/coronavirus-update/

Community College of Denver: No announcements on campus closures or a transition to online courses has been made as of March 12. Updates concerning campus operations are expected.

Colorado Christian University

As of March 12, “classes, chapel and other operations on the Lakewood campus for students in the College of Undergraduate Studies will continue as usual at this time.” www.ccu.edu/coronavirus/

Colorado School of Mines

Classes will be canceled March 16-20 to prepare for a transition to remote and online courses. All courses will transition to online by March 30, which will be implemented for the remainder of the semester. Though classes will not be taking place in-person, the campus and its facilities will remain open to provide academic support services. www.mines.edu/emergency/coronavirus/

Front Range Community College

Classes are canceled during the week of March 16 at the Westminster and Boulder County campuses, and the week of March 23 at the Larimer Campus. Spring break has been extended by one week, but campus buildings will remain open. Classes on all campuses will resume on March 30. However, most classes will be conducted either online or videoconferencing, and some will be conducted through a combination of remote access and campus-based lab time where social distance can be maintained. It is expected that courses will continue as such for the remainder of the semester. https://www.frontrange.edu/

Johnson & Wales University Denver Campus

As of March 11, the school's website stated: “A Denver Campus student who presented to that campus' Health Services is presumably positive while awaiting CDC evaluation. Out of an abundance of caution, the Denver Campus remains closed and updates are being provided to those students, faculty and staff.” www.jwu.edu/news/coronavirus.html

Red Rocks Community College

Classes will not be held from March 16-29. Remote instruction and exams for most classes, and risk reduction plans for those classes not easily transitioned into remote instruction will be in place beginning March 30. www.rrcc.edu/cdphe-coronavirus

Regis University

Regis University's website states “academic continuation plans have been developed to ensure that courses may continue online in the event that face-to-face instruction must be suspended for a period of time. As the situation unfolds, the university response will evolve in equal measure.” www.regisupdates.com

University of Denver

As of March 12, the University of Denver is not closing its campus. However, certain measures are being implemented: All classes will move to online courses, beginning March 17 and continuing until at least April 10. Decisions about whether online instruction will continue for the remainder of the spring term will be made no later than March 31. In-person, winter quarter exams beginning on March 17 will be moved to remote or online exams. www.du.edu/coronavirus

Colleges outside of the Denver area

University of Colorado-Boulder: Starting March 16, the university will transition to online classes for the rest of the semester.

Colorado State University: A transition to online courses will occur by March 25.

University of Northern Colorado: All classes will be taught remotely following the university's spring break, March 15-22, through April 5. In-person classes are expected to resume on April 6, but that could change.

Colorado College: Spring break has been extended until March 29. Distance-learning classes only may be implemented for the remainder of the academic year.

Colorado Mesa University: As of March 11, the campus is open, but following spring break, courses will be temporarily moved to an online format from March 23-April 5.
