Jeffco school board appoints Rick Rush to vacant seat

Posted

Rick Rush was appointed to fill the open seat on the Jeffco Board of Education by active board members in a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8. He was sworn in by Judge Jeffrey Pilkington during a special session the next day.

Rush will replace boardmember Ron Mitchell, who announced he was stepping down from the board for health reasons, in November.

Rush will hold the seat for the remainder of Mitchell's term, ending in 2021. In addition to his position as Director of District 5, Rush will serve as 2nd Vice President of the Jeffco School Board of Education.

Rush served on the board previously, when he was voted in to fill a seat vacated in 2008 by Vince Chowdhury. Chowdhury was asked to step down after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.

The members of the Jeffco Board of Education held interviews eight candidates to fill the open District 5 seat.

Rush was selected from a candidate pool that included Marie Watkins, Sean McGraw, Rebecca Woulfe, Tim James, Kathy Miks, Nic Rosales and Susan Lopez.

In a statement following his appointment, Rush shared the following:

"I have always been a strong believer in the value of community-driven public education. It is through well-run school districts that we have a quality workforce, supporting neighborhoods where people want to live and raise families. And now with the pandemic, public school boards need to lead in the development of student and staff resiliency and community building and healing."
