Letter to the editor: Wear mask to demonstrate care

In response to the letter by Smith Young, you claim that your opposition to wearing a mask is “obstructing choice.” Is wearing a seat belt “obstructing choice” or is it mandatory to help save lives? Is not smoking in public “obstructing choice” or helping save lives?

COVID-19 is spread via droplets from someone who is coughing, sneezing and talking within a few feet, or from fomites. There are studies now that show coronavirus may be airborne also. A new study in “Nature” published April 27 measures the virus's RNA. This study found higher levels of COVID-19 RNA in inpatient areas such as rooms and toilets.

So in order not to spread COVID-19, wearing a mask is for the safety of all people. (Most recent CDC guidelines). Approximately 40-50% of infected people are asymptomatic. Another study by “Nature” (April 2020) showed 44% of people who spread COVID-19 are asymptomatic. Wearing a mask says: Not only do I value my life, but I also value yours.
