Letter to the editor: Douglas County commissioners should reconsider Tri-County decision

Posted

If limited government and health are truly important to our county commissioners, they must do what is reasonable and reconsider their commitment to separate from Tri-County Health.

To ensure a proper outcome of the discussion and invite due process and consideration, a delay in the decision will allow partisan discussions over our health to calm and the risk of added confusion in how our citizens collectively respond to COVID-19 to be mitigated.

Our small-government commissioners are proposing to make government larger by adding a health agency, which will take time and money during an on-going pandemic.

The adherence to the orders by Tri-County Health in our county seem quite high: I’m not sure the citizens (our commissioners represent) are that outraged by taking the inconvenient, but worthwhile steps to try and slow the spread of a virus that can put some members of our community at great risk. How is their decision truly motivated or influenced by community consideration instead of partisan revolt against perceived threats to liberty?

There are ways in which liberty has been put at risk during this pandemic, yet our commissioners are distracted by masks and their own party pride. Why open bars before allowing us to gather in our churches? Why fund laudable causes in the spring yet overlook additional funding for schools — where were you on issues that would keep the freedom of worship and a freedom for our children to continue on a semi-normal routine with access to education?
