As a resident of Douglas County I was very disappointed with the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) decision to opt out of having to wear a mask. My concern now is that if the governor scales back on wearing a mask, BOCC will not support Tri-County Health Department recommendations. This would leave Douglas County residents vulnerable to a board that won’t listen to health officials if they don’t have to.

It has been proven that wearing masks reduces the spread of COVID-19. CDC recommends that Americans wear masks in public situations where it is difficult to maintain social distancing.

I work with the public. It is unrealistic to think that everyone will stay 6 feet apart. Wearing a mask protects me and my colleagues! If masks are not required, will there be another major outbreak forcing businesses to close? Our businesses can’t handle another prolonged closure. Why aren’t the county commissions protecting their own economy and constituents?

My hope is that on Nov. 3 we can elect county commissioners that are concerned for the well-being of all the residents of Douglas County. Darien Wilson has committed to listening to facts and experts when making decisions that affect our health and economy.
