Letter: Assault weapons are false idol

I am white and used to be a Christian. One of my mother’s brothers, Uncle Lowell, was a Methodist minister who ministered to two or three backwoods congregations in rural West Virginia in the 1930s, 1040s and early 1050s. One memory that really stands out was his table blessings. I mean, he would bless food until it got too cold to eat.

Another memory was the pocket Bibles which he gave to his brothers in WWII and later to our mother who gave them to my three brothers, and myself, as each of us we left home to serve in the military. Mine is dated September 17, 1952. I am sure my uncle would be OK with my older brother and myself not being Christians as some modern-day Christians are big on worshiping false idols and my little pocket Bible frowns on this practice.

The false idol that many white Christians worship is a modern-day weapon of war, the assault rifle. This is not a tool to put food on the table or defend our homes, but an offensive weapon designed to kill people in great numbers. Many victims of this false idol are children and many are killed in our schools. Both my brother, who is 92, and myself, talk about the Pearly Gates remaining locked to those we can name who worship false idols. After 181 years of combined living, the list is getting pretty long.
