During my first campaign to represent House District 24, I vowed that I would use my position to create more pathways for survivors of domestic violence to escape abusive relationships and dangerous situations. As a survivor of domestic abuse, this is an issue that is close to my heart.Twenty five years ago, then-Senator Joe Biden led the effort to pass his landmark legislation to end violence against women. The Violence Against Women Act had two goals: to protect women’s safety and civil rights. It took four years for that bill to pass. Today, there is no question that domestic violence is a crime because of his efforts. Biden didn’t stop there. Rather, he strengthened the law to protect our most vulnerable populations which included Native women,undocumented immigrants, and our LGBTQ community.There is still more we need to do. As President, Vice President Joe Biden will prioritize delivering justice to survivors while also expanding the safety net. It’s time we remove the stigma of domestic violence and make sure victims never feel like they are alone. I am proud and thankful that I was able to get myself and my son out of an abusive situation all those years ago, and I am grateful to all of the people who helped me along the way. That’s why I support Joe Biden for President. He is the only candidate who has a strong record on ending domestic violence, not because it’s easy, but because it’s the right thing to do.
