Anna Shaw takes freestyle swimming from 4A to 5A

The adjustment made by Anna Shaw is complete.

Shaw, a junior swimmer at Heritage, won the 50-yard freestyle in Class 4A as a freshman. Heritage moved up to 5A last season and Shaw was third in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

At this year’s 5A state meet, which was held Feb. 13-14 at the VMAC in Thornton, Shaw captured first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.99, was second in the 100 freestyle and swam on two Heritage relay teams.

“I won two years ago in 4A and going to 5A was a little adjustment” Shaw acknowledged. “I feel good to be a state champion again and overcome that obstacle of moving up to 5A.”

Shaw has been selected as the 2020 Colorado Community Media South Metro girls Swimmer of the Year.

“Looking back on this high school season I’m really incredibly excited about how it ended,” said Shaw. “It felt like a really good build during the entire season and I ended on a high note.”

Heritage head coach Tom Byorick praised Shaw’s leadership

“She was obviously a huge part of our relays,” said Byorick. “She is so versatile she can do it all. She has found a lot about herself and some versatilities over the past year. I don’t know that she expected it. It is not a surprise for anybody that works with her. But if Anna makes up her mind to do something, she is pretty good at getting it done.”

“She is just an incredible human being that can make others feel great about themselves even if they are down. She is a natural leader and great athlete obviously. She has a lot of character.”
