In November, Castle Rock residents will usher in their first mayor elected by a townwide vote of the people.
The town transitions to an at-large system this year after decades of appointing its mayor from among a seven-member council.
Before the community can vote, candidates must make the ballot — an effort requiring they collect 10 signatures from each of the town's newly formed six districts by Aug. 27. The process began Aug. 7 with four declared candidates as of Aug. 9 hoping to make the ballot. More candidates could enter the race before the Aug 27 deadline.
Those attempting to get on the ballot so far are former mayor Randy Reed, who was appointed by his fellow councilmembers under the old system; Jason Gray, owner of Crowfoot Valley Coffee; IT professional Charles Fletcher; and Kenny Lowenberg, for whom more information was not immediately available.
The men share some vision for the town's future. None claim to be anti-growth, in fact some say it will be good for the town in some respects, and all favor the current weak mayor system. That means the mayor does not have more power than his or her fellow councilmembers.
They also want more employers that offer higher-paying jobs and will help keep residents living and working in town.
Before candidates may be placed on the ballot, Town Clerk Lisa Anderson must verify the signatures collected through Aug. 27.
