The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for northern Jefferson County, western Arapahoe County, northern Douglas county and Denver.

The advisory will last until 7:30 p.m. in all areas, except in Jefferson County where it is issued until 7:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service advises drivers to be aware of their surroundings and not drive on flooded roads.

“Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads,” the advisory says. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”

The Littleton Police Department tweeted that they are on "accident alert" due to extreme weather and said all should drive with extra caution. They said six inches of moving water can carry an adult, 12 inches of moving water can carry a small car and 18 to 24 inches of moving water can carry away most trucks.

Up to one inch of rain has fallen today in some areas and the weather service predicts additional rainfall of up to 1 inch in northern Jefferson County and 1.5 inches in western Arapahoe County, northern Douglas County and Denver.

The alert says this additional rainfall will result in minor flooding, water over roadways and ponding of water in urban or other areas.

Locations that will experience flooding include Northeastern Lakewood, Arvada, western Westminster, Golden, Centennial, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Littleton, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, Sheridan, Wheat Ridge, Chatfield Reservoir, northern Castle Pines, The Pinery, Cherry Hills Village, Cherry Creek, Columbine and others.
