Ponderosa senior striker Chris Cornn finished a pretty good soccer season.
Cornn was named the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
“He is definitely the speediest, fastest striker and most dangerous player that I’ve ever coached,” said Ponderosa coach Jim Engels. “He was a captain last year and a captain this year but he did a 360 as far as maturity and everything.
“And I worked with him in the summer on finishing. He had a lot of opportunities his junior year and we worked on that a lot and that’s why he scored so much this year. And he also had a lot of assists.”
Cornn had at least one point in all 14 games he played during the 2019 season and had five game-winning goals. He led the Continental League with 14 goals and 37 points and was the league’s Player of the Year.
“I do rely on my speed,” said Cornn, “but I was taught to embrace my speed and how to use it more than just straight-up running. It’s really all about positioning because I just can’t stand there for the whole 90 minutes.
“Growing during the club season really helped me a lot. I got a lot of finishing reputation. It feels great to score a goal, probably the best feeling.”
