Poage out of Parker mayoral race

Council member to support colleague in three-way race

Posted

The four-person race for mayor of Parker is now down to three.

Cheryl Poage is no longer running for mayor after failing to return her nomination petition before the Aug. 24 deadline, she said. Now, the sitting Parker Town Council member is endorsing her colleague  on council in the mayoral race, Jeff Toborg.

The field is now down to Toborg, Jonathan Bollefer and Council Member Josh Rivero.

A combination of factors, including local wildfires and scheduling conflicts, made it difficult for Poage to circulate her petition in time, she said.

“It’s not so much that I didn’t really want to,” Poage said.

Poage said she has made several trips to the Crystal Lake area, northwest of Fort Collins, to evacuate her cabin property the week of Aug. 17. The cabin was threatened by the massive Cameron Peak fire.

Fire officials issued a voluntary evacuation for the area where Poage’s cabin is located during the same week Parker council and mayoral candidates were to circulate a nomination petition of 25 signatures. The day before the filing deadline, Poage prepared to visit Montana, a trip she and her family had planned since April, she said.

“I really felt I had my hands full at the time,” Poage said. “On top of that, we wound up with four candidates, and that’s a bit much to put out there.”

Poage said she did not request a deadline extension to submit her paperwork to run for mayor.

Poage said she is now throwing her weight behind Toborg. Both were elected in 2018 and often stick together in council deliberations.

“I highly support Jeff and he will be the only one I support for mayor because I think he will do the best job,” Poage said.

Poage reiterated her desire as a council member to “make changes” at Parker Town Hall, with people who are “more interested in the citizens and the future of the town rather than some of their own personal gains.”

Poage said she supports three non-incumbent candidates for town council as well. There are 12 candidates running for three at-large Parker Town Council seats: Anne Barrington, John Diak, Michael Drennan, Friz Freund, Mark Hall, Laura Hefta, Todd Hendreks, Nate Matthews, Lindsey Quist, Jeeva Senthilnathan, Kendra Sindelman and Brandi Wilks.

Former Parker Mayor David Casiano stepped out of the race Aug. 23. In his announcement, he warned voters to be wary of candidates who are running in support of each other—or “slate” candidates.

When asked, Poage denied that the three candidates she supported constituted a slate, saying she did not know the candidates prior to their campaigns.

“You can’t call it a slate. Its not put together by anybody,” Poage said.
