State 3A swimming , Elite 8 basketball round postponed

AURORA -- The potential for heavy snow this weekend is causing some issues with state playoffs in girls swimming and  boys and girls basketball.

CHSAA postponed the elite 8 round of the boys and girls state tournaments until Monday, March 15, and pushed back the final four round of each tournament until Wednesday, March 17.

CHSAA assistant Commissioner Bert Bormann said schools can pracitce Sunday, March 14, because Monday is a playoff date.

"Knowing that the potential for significant snowfall is imminent, we will continue to monitor the impact of the storm in the event an additional postponement is needed," Borgmann said in a press release. "Should that be necessary, we will play Great 8 on Tuesday, March 16, but still have the semifinal games on March 17."

Earlier in the week, CHSAA postponed the state girls 3A swim meet until March 15. The schedule of events remains the same. Diving begins at 8 a.m., and the first race is set to start at 11:40 a.m.

In a tweet, CHSAA assistant commissioner Justin Saylor said the reason to postpone the 3A meet, in part, was due to the travel arrangements for several of the schools.

"With schools traveling from Moffat County, Gunnison, La Junta, etc. for this meet, the decision has been made to postpone," the tweet said. "VMAC is an Adams 12 Five Star District Facility and in all likelihood if the storm is half as bad as they are predicting, the facility and district would be closed Saturday, potentially stranding schools in the metro area for several days. To allow schools an opportunity to plan, we wanted to make this decision as early as possible."

There were changes to the state 4A and 5A swim meets. The 4A meet is Friday, March 12,  Weather forecasters say the worst of the storm is supposed to start late Friday night. All three meets will be at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, East 136th Avenue and Holly Street in Thornton.

CHSAA plans to issue alternate plans for the Elite 8 of the boys and girls basketball teams late March 11 or sometime early March 12. That round of the state playoffs is set for Saturday, March 13, the day forecasters say will be the beginning of the heaviest  snow fall. If there is a change, CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said the Elite 8 would be rescheduled for March 15 and that the final four would move to Wednesday, March 17.

The wrestling tournaments are still on The girls tournament is March 11. The 2A and 3A boys tournaments are March 12, and the 4A/5A tournaments are March 13.

CHSAA bylaws say postponing a tournament becomes necessary if 25 percent or more of the participants can't be in attendance. CHSAA assistant commissionier Adam Bright said the majority of the schools involved plan to be in attendance by Friday night.
