Two members of the Weld RE-8 board of education want a special meeting to talk about mask mandates.

As of May 3, none was forthcoming.

The two, Cody LeBlanc and Jaime Sierra,  said they want to stand for the individual, medical and social well-being of students and staff.

"We believe every family knows what is best for their students and their students' education. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have any other board members joining us in our request to hold a meeting and allow concerns from families to be shared in the form of a meeting," LeBlanc messaged April 30. "While we believe it is in the best interests of  our studentsm families and teachers to make their own decisions regarding the use of face coverings, we do understand that many teachers and staff may be uncomfortable with making masks optional, resulting in mass absences for the rest of the year."

LeBlanc and Sierra called those feelings "unfortunate."

"Our students deserve the best education we can provide, and currently, it is obstructed by the face coverings and could be further disrupted with teacher absences," their letter said.

The letter also cites a pair of exemptions from the state's mask order. Those apply to children under the age of 10 and to those who cannot medically tolerate face masks.

Board president Susan Browne and Superintendent Alan Kaylor have had no comment.
