The impact of COVID-19 on the sports world has extended to the Colorado high school level.

The Colorado High School Activities Association has suspended all spring sports and activities through April 6, according to a news release issued on March 12. The decision was scheduled to become effective as of March 13.

“The situation will be monitored and evaluated with key decision-makers from around the state to determine when, or if, to resume the spring season,” the release states.

In addition to sporting events, the decision means the suspension of activities such as music festivals and the state speech tournament, according to the release.

On March 11, CHSAA made the decision to dramatically limit the number of people allowed to attend the state high school basketball championships, scheduled for March 12-14. Those games, part of the winter sports season, were still scheduled to be played as of the morning of March 12.

CHSAA's moves came on the heels of Gov. Jared Polis' announcement that large public gatherings, including sporting events, should have protocols in place to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
