State to distribute free surgical grade masks

Polis says program builds on state efforts to protect Coloradans

Starting later this week, public libraries, fire stations, recreation centers, VFWs, YMCAs and high-traffic community centers that have agreed to be local redistribution points will have KN95 and surgical-grade masks for those who ask.

In a press statement, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said that this is part of the state's ongoing effort to provide high-quality personal protective equipment to Coloradans who might be especially at risk during the pandemic and future public health emergencies.

With the COVID-19 omicron variant surge, the state recommends upgrading from cloth masks to medical-grade masks like the KN95.

“We are on a mission to help Coloradans keep themselves safe, and free medical-grade masks are far more effective in preventing infection than cloth masks,” Polis said. ”By making free medical-grade masks available at libraries across our state and soon for home delivery, we are giving Coloradans a powerful tool to avoid infection.

In addition, he said, the state will continue to meet Coloradans where they are at when it comes to accessing doctor-approved vaccines, free testing at community sites, and free COVID tests delivered to homes.

While masks are free, the distribution is limited to select locations that have agreed to participate in the state program. Some libraries may not be participating in the program.
