On Dec. 18 around 11 p.m., the Arvada Police Department announced on Twitter that it had arrested the suspect thought to be involved in an incident earlier that morning, when a man robbed the gas station at 80th Avenue and Kipling Street.

 

When confronted by an off-duty Denver police officer who was at the scene, the suspect fired at the officer. The officer was injured and is being treated at a local hospital, and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, said Arvada detective Dave Snelling.

 

In the Dec. 18 announcement, police said the officer was "in good condition."

 

After firing at the officer, the suspect drove away in a gold Chevy Equinox. The department requested the public's help in locating the vehicle and suspect, with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation sending out a statewide emergency alert that afternoon. Alerts are sent out for "kidnapped children, missing and endangered elderly, serious hit and run suspects, and for criminals who seriously injure or kill police officers," Arvada police said on Twitter.

 

Officers located the suspect around 5 p.m. on Dec. 18 in the 8300 block of Sheridan Boulevard, a department release said.

 

The release identified the suspect as Samuel McConnell. McConnell was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.

 

According to a separate department tweet, the incident is not related to a similar occurrence that took place the night of Dec. 14, when two individuals allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint outside his home and later fired shots at officers.

 

"Thanks to tips, an arrest was made in the shooting and robbery that occurred earlier December 18th," an Arvada Police tweet read. "Our thanks to all of our Fire and LE partners."
