An Englewood police officer was shot and wounded and a 31-year-old man was killed in an exchange of gunfire the night of June 9 at the Englewood RTD light rail station, Englewood police said.
Police responded to 901 Englewood Parkway, where the ArtWalk apartments sit, following a call about domestic violence just before 9 p.m., police said in a news release. The situation involved a firearm that was pointed at a victim, the release said.
Officers contacted Marcus James Uribe — who had been identified as the suspect in the call to police — on the south side of the light rail station, according to the release. The suspect and officers exchanged gunfire, the release said. The light rail station sits adjacent to the Englewood Civic Center, the city hall.
Sgt. Tracy Jones said police could not release information on whether officers or the suspect fired first, whether the suspect followed commands before shooting, and how many officers fired their weapons. Police also did not say whether the suspect lives at the apartments in the area of 901 Englewood Parkway. Uribe resided in Englewood, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.
Officer Lauren Riddle was shot and was taken to Swedish Medical Center. She was released June 17 and is recovering, according to a June 18 news release.
Officers Dirk Smith and Dan Raddell were also involved in the incident, and neither was hurt during the shooting, according to the release.
During the exhange of gunfire, a dog was inadvertently shot and died on scene, according to the release.
The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave per department policy, according to the release.
Uribe was born in Wheat Ridge and served as a corporal in the Marine Corps, including during a tour of duty in Afghanistan, according to an online obituary. Uribe was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps medal, a non-combat award received for heroism, for putting himself in harm’s way in saving the life of a teenager, according to the obituary.
Online comments on that obituary mention Uribe as working at Denver's Union Station. He studied at the Art Institute of Colorado and pursued a degree in video production and digital filmmaking, according to his LinkedIn profile.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team — a group of law enforcement officials from nearby agencies — responded to the scene to investigate, as is usual policy for officer-involved shootings in the area.
The 18th Judicial District includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.
The role of the Critical Response Team is to investigate the use of force by deputies and present its findings to the district attorney.
The light-rail station is near West Hampden Avenue and South Santa Fe Drive.
KMGH-Denver7 reported that RTD "suspended the C line for the police investigation and shuttle buses were taking passengers between the Evans and Littleton stations." As of 1:15 p.m. June 10, there was no disruption to the light rail and the station was fully operational, Jones said.
