Candidate profile: Mike Bieda

For Lakewood City Council Ward 3

Posted

Profession: Lawyer/retired, and current Ward 3 representative

Residence: Lasley neighborhood

Why are you seeking this office?

In order to preserve the Heart and Soul of Lakewood; which is our small town way of life, our neighborhoods, homes, schools, parks and most of all, our people. To give my neighbors an effective voice on Lakewood City Council and someone to champion the will of the people instead of special interests. Its time to put the people in charge.

What makes you the best person for the job?

My experience as a practicing lawyer for 4 years, District Judge, Assistant Attorney General and my service the past 4 years on City Council. The fact that I grew up right here in Lakewood, graduated from Alameda High school, before going on to college and then graduated from Law School. I know my neighbors and friends in Ward 3 and what they value. I work for them, not the Lakewood establishment and not the developers.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

1. To reduce the ever increasing crime in Lakewood by supporting our Police Department. An example would be to establish a police substation in Bel Mar.
2. To maintain our way of life by reducing traffic congestion, noise pollution, light pollution. Revise our Zoning code to limit the discretion and authority of the planning director.
3. To have the recently named Peak View Park renamed to honor our veterans from Lakewood who fought and died for this country. The name should be changed to Veterans Memorial Open Space, or something similar.

Has city hall done an appropriate job in implementing the citizen-approved growth ordinance?

No. The most glaring failure is not limiting blighted areas to those that are part of an Urban Renewal Corridor as intended by the growth ordinance. Those areas that are legitimately blighted should count all new living units towards the 1% growth limitation as provided in the ordinance itself.

What is one part of the city that you feel could definitely use more council attention, and why?

Economic Development. The business economy is rapidly changing. We need more start up businesses in Lakewood, as well as established businesses. The Federal Center contracts billions of dollars every year to small businesses; those businesses need to be located in Lakewood. The implementation of an incubator near the federal center for new businesses to help them become established.

Election 2021, Mike Bieda, Ward 3
