Police determine bomb threat at Castle View High School was not credible

Posted

Castle Rock police have determined a bomb threat at Castle View High School that spurred evacuations and the early dismissal of students this morning was not credible.

The police department announced on social media that the investigation was on-going but that there was no danger to the school community. Police had not made any arrests as of approximately 3 p.m.

Castle View student Caleb Epp, 16, said students appeared to stay calm while being evacuated and spent their time before dismissal speculating about what caused the evacuation.

He did not feel scared when the evacuation began because he sat near an exit, he said, but he expected he would have felt "terrified" were that not the case.

"When they said this is an evacuation, not a drill, first thing in my head was, there's a shooter," Caleb said.

The sophomore said police's visibility and presence around school grounds made him feel more safe, and he began to suspect the threat was not a shooting when he saw law enforcement taking K-9s around the building.

Across the street from Castle View, Caleb's mother, Ash, waited to pick him up. She and Caleb texted one anther throughout the morning, initially discussing what he should do if a shooting broke out before the district announced police were investigating a possible bomb threat.

"It's terrifying," Ash said. "It's crazy that this is an actual conversation I have to have with my kids these days."

The Douglas County School District had announced at 11:19 a.m. that students at Castle View High School in Castle Rock were evacuated from the building following a "possible bomb threat." Police were on campus and the surrounding area, blocking off the entrance to the school.

After police deemed the threat non-credible, the Douglas County School District said on social media that students could return to class as normal on Sept. 22.
