ENGLEWOOD, Colorado  / Sept. 27, 2022 / — Colorado Community Media announced today that it has named Michael de Yoanna as its new editor-in-chief.

De Yoanna’s career spans more than two decades and includes distinguished roles as both a reporter and editor, including eight years with KUNC-FM and Colorado Public Radio. His work has been recognized with dozens of statewide and national honors, including a shared duPont-Columbia Award with NPR for an investigative piece into the U.S. Army's mistreatment of combat soldiers struggling with mental health issues.

For his role as KUNC news director during the historic #MeToo investigations at the state Capitol that resulted in a state representative’s expulsion by his peers, de Yoanna received the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

“It's an honor to be selected to lead this award-winning team of editors and reporters known for their dedication to public policy and community news,” de Yoanna said. “I look forward to working with the team at Colorado Community Media, meeting our readers and hearing about the issues important to them and their communities."

A graduate of Metropolitan State University with a degree in political science and psychology, de Yoanna has helped mentor and guide the careers of up-and-coming journalists for Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. and Report for America.

"The editor-in-chief is an interesting role for us,” Colorado Community Media Publisher Linda Shapley said. “This individual needs to be part coach, part fixer and all about how to make a news organization benefit the 24 communities we serve. It’s a tall order, and I think Michael is the right person for the job. He has demonstrated his enthusiasm for my vision, and we are on the same page when it comes to what community news needs to be.”

A lover of the great outdoors, de Yoanna is a bicyclist. He also plays a “wild” electric guitar, enjoys trivia contests and soccer.

He will assume his new role on Oct. 3, 2022.
