There’s no better way to spend a summer Wednesday evening in Evergreen than at the first Evergreen Lake Concert of the season.

Hundreds of people of all ages crowded into the area in front of the Lake House on June 22 to hear headliner Dr. Poz & Friends plus two teens who won the Evergreen’s Got Talent competition. While children played, adults sat back in lawn chairs or on blankets listening to music and enjoying the beautiful evening. Some brought picnic dinners while others purchased food from several food trucks.

Truth be told, some checked their phones occasionally to find out how the fourth playoff game was going for the Avalanche. In addition, attendees didn’t seem to mind some changes to security and to food and beverages allowed in the concert.

“It’s been two years since we’ve been able to do this,” Dr. Poz aka Paul Cohen told the crowd from the stage in front of the Lake House. “We’re back, and you are back, too.”

Cohen, who has lived in Evergreen and Conifer for 25 years, calls himself a physician-musician — an anesthesiologist by day and a performer by night. He explained that this was his first time headlining a Lake Concert, and he was glad that other local musicians, whom he called amazing and talented, joined him for the 90-minute concert.

Cohen was called Pos meaning positive when he lived on the East Coast because of his positive, upbeat personality. It morphed to Poz and then to Dr. Poz once he moved to the foothills.

“We play feel-good music,” he said. “If it feels good, we play it.”

The repertoire includes rock, funk, jazz, soul, Motown — you name it, if people can dance and sing to it, Dr. Poz plays it.

“It has to do with positive vibrations,” he said. “(Getting others to) move is an important part of our purpose. If you are dancing and singing, then you are happy.”

He gave credit to both the Woodcellar and Cactus Jack’s for giving him a venue to help his music evolve.

Conifer High School junior Kaiya Paul, 2022 graduate Isabel Cloutier and senior Katie Legnard found a picnic table to share a shave ice from Slife’s Sweet Freeze Shave Ice, saying they liked the positive atmosphere.

The beer, wine and margarita tents were busy too, and the tip jars brought donations to Active4All, the foundation arm of the Evergreen Park & Recreation District. Active4All helps fund rec district projects, donates funds to the INSPIRE special needs program and provides funding to families that can’t afford to participate in rec district programs.

Maddy McFarland with Evergreen Audubon had cool things for kids and adults to check out such as fur pelts from wild animals and an owl and Abert squirrel. Evergreen Audubon runs programs at the Evergreen Nature Center at the lake.

Jennie Glenn of Pine danced the evening away in front of the stage, using a hula hoop. She brought other hula hoops, so children could play with them, too.

Glenn said she’s been attending lake concerts for 15 years, and about three decades ago, she learned to dance with a hula hoop.

“It’s so playful,” she said. “I love to see the kids enjoying (the hula hoops) too.”
