Investigators arrested a woman who formerly taught at a youth detention center in Centennial on suspicion of engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage inmate, according to a news release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

Maggie Christine Stastny, 32, was arrested Sept. 19 on a charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, according to the release. The assault allegedly occurred at the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center, at 13500 E. Fremont Place, earlier this year, the release said.

Stastny was a Cherry Creek School District employee assigned to teach at the center, according to the release. The district provides licensed teaching staff for youths in the facility, according to the center's website.

The sheriff's office is not releasing the inmate's age, spokesperson Deborah Sherman said.

On May 8, Stastny met with an inmate in a living area for a group of youth, and a Colorado Department of Human Services employee observed the interaction and confronted the teacher, according to that department. The employee reported the interaction to Foote center administration, Ruble said.

The next day, the school district placed Stastny on administrative leave, according to the department. The inmate was released May 14.

On Aug. 15, additional information was learned that Stastny had reached out to staff and had admitted to having a sexual relationship with the inmate, according to the department.

"CDHS staff at the center acted quickly and appropriately to the May 8 suspicions as well as when further information came forward on Aug. 15," the department said in a statement. The department said it "is grateful for the work" of the sheriff's office, the Arapahoe County Human Services Department and the school district in response to the information provided to them by CDHS, the statement added.

Stastny was being held on a $25,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 8.

Sheriff's office investigators believe there may be other victims, the release said. Those with information can call the sheriff's office investigative tip line at 720-874-8477, or call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous at 720-913-7867.
