Valor goalie shows real grit

Trey Hirschfield chosen as Hockey Player of Year

Trey Hirschfield is like most good goaltenders and knows a lot of his success depends on the defense in front of him.

Hirschfield, a senior at Valor Christian, has been named the 2020 Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

He was chosen from hockey teams in the Douglas County and Littleton school districts plus Valor Christian, Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail.

Hirschfield was 13-1-0 this season with a 1.20 goals against average with six shutouts. In the three playoffs games, he was 3-0 for the state champion Eagles with 0.27 goals against average with a .986 saves percentage and two shutouts.

He shut out Fort Collins in five overtimes in a 1-0 win in the March 10 state championship game.

“Pretty much all my stats are just drop-ins pretty much,” admitted Hirschfield. “I can’t take much credit. It was mostly my team. My defense was phenomenal this year. It was the best defense I’ve ever had in front of me. They sacrificed their bodies for anything and blocked shots.”

Valor hockey coach George Gwozdecky claims Hirschfield grew as a goalie this season.

“Trey came up big for us,” said Gwozdecky. “He had a shutout for us in the championship game. And he allowed one goal against Regis. He’s really matured in the position, his ability to be able to work harder and be stronger mentally. It was a real test for him in the championship game where he was not getting a lot of action and then all of a sudden he had to come up with a big save or play.

“I don’t know if he would have been able to do that last year but he’s really, especially this year, come a long way as far as his work habits, his concentration in games and practices. He’s improved quite a bit in his puck-handling ability and that’s an important part of the position as anything else is.”
