Internationally touring exhibit coming Jan. 8

“Somnyama Ngonyama: Hail the Dark Lioness” is an internationally touring exhibit that will be featured at the CVA (Center for Visual Art) from Jan. 8 to March 20. It is organized by Autograph, London, curated by Renee Mussai and features more than 80 self-portraits by visual activist Zanele Muholi (born 1972 in South Africa). Muholi uses the pronoun “they” and “uses their body as a canvas to confront the deeply personal politics of race and representation.” The title, from isiZulu, one of the official languages of South Africa, “playfully employs the conventions of classical painting, fashion photography and the familiar tropes of ethnographic imagery to rearticulate contemporary identity politics,” according to Metropolitan State University’s CVA, 965 Santa Fe Drive, Denver. Check hours and procedures during the pandemic: www.msudenver.edu/cva, 303-294-5207.

CORE New Art Space

A new CORE New Art Space gallery all-members show runs through Jan. 17 at CORE’s new address, 6851 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood. It will feature a variety of mediums, including mixed media assemblages, 3D abstract expressionism, surrealism and realism, portraits, landscapes, graphics, ceramics, fiber arts, photography, sculpture ... Large and small-scale works by members of this versatile, longtime coop group which has moved to Lakewood from its former Santa Fe Drive location. Hours during COVID restrictions (check for updates before going): Friday 6 to 9 p.m.; Saturday/Sunday noon to 4 p.m.; coreartspace.com, 303-297-8428. (Littleton’s Michelle Lamb, who painted the city’s light rail station mural, is an active member.)

Canal Collaborative

The new Canal Collaborative encompasses the former High Line Canal Working Group including all the regional partners: Denver Water, local governments, stormwater managers and the High Line Canal Conservancy — to hopefully do more as one group than any one entity can do alone. The new management structure will support a 71-mile-long linear park. Watch for more details about management structure. The concept is endorsed by all the governmental entities involved. Hooray!

Denver Art Museum

“Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism” continues to Jan. 24 at the Denver Art Museum. Timed tickets must be reserved in advance at denverartmuseum.org or call 720-913-0130. The exhibit includes more than 20 artworks by Kahlo and was organized by the Vergel Foundation in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL) and curated locally by Rebecca Hart, who serves as the Vicki and Kent Logan Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the DAM. It includes more than 150 artworks, focused on the post-Mexican Revolution works of internationally celebrated artists. Just announced: “Whistler to Cassatt: American Painters in France” will be presented at DAM Nov. 14, 2021 to Feb. 13, 2022. More than 100 paintings made from 1855 to 1913 will show the French influence on American painting of the period.

Columbine Genealogy and History Society

The Columbine Genealogy and History Society plans a Zoom meeting for Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. on “Using Charts to Connect the Dots: Timelines, Identity Charts and FAN Club Charts,” presented by Carol Darrow, who will explore the uses of these tools. On Jan. 19 at 1 p.m., “Military Records on the Internet” will be presented by Marilyn Elrod. Members will receive an invitation — log on 10 minutes in advance. Non-members should request an invitation at columbinegenealogy@gmail.com. (Must install Zoom on your device.)

Denver Lyric Opera Guild

Denver Lyric Opera Guild will hope to offer a virtual opera on Tuesdays soon. A first session featured young apprentices from Opera Colorado — virtually. See the DLOG website for membership information: denverlyricoperaguild.org. The annual competition for singers will be livestreamed without the usual in-person audience this year. More on this as we receive notice. Opera lovers look forward to this competition.

Coming soon from LPS

The Annual Littleton Public School District K-12 Student Art Show will run as a virtual show from Jan. 19 to May 31. More on this soon, with images. Encouraging to note that LPS students are continuing to create — in and out of the classroom.
