Chaparral’s girls volleyball team had not lost a set in its last six matches, dating back to Sept. 19.

However, the Wolverines lost two sets on Oct. 14 in a match against Parker rival Legend, but Chap still prevailed to come away with a 3-2 win after a dramatic 17-15 victory in the 15-point deciding fifth set.

The win gave the Wolverines, ranked third in the final CHSAANow.com final 5A poll, the outright Continental League championship with one league game still remaining.

Chap is 9-0 in the league and has a 16-2 overall record. Legend slipped to 6-3 and 13-9 overall.

“We hadn’t lost a set in a while,” said Chap coach Amanda West. “We haven’t seen a lot of competition — not that teams haven’t competed well. We haven’t seen a team like Legend that took us out of our system. We can compete in the hard building and we did that.

“Both teams competed really well and kept making adjustments. This will help us down the road. It taught the players a lesson about high-level, high-stress games, so we’re excited to come out with a win.”

Chap notched its 12th straight win with the conquest of Legend, and the Wolverines had to work hard to keep their winning streak alive.

Legend won the first and third sets (25-22 and 25-20) while Chap took the second and fourth by identical 25-17 scores in the match played before a capacity crowd at the Chaparral gym.

In the fifth set, Legend held a couple early three-point advantages, but with the score deadlocked at 15, Sophia Mason had a kill and Chap got the match set point on a mishit ball.

Katie Dalton, a 5-foot-11 senior, had 29 kills and five blocks to pace the Wolverines. Mason finished with 15 kills and eight blocks. Ella Vogel had 23 digs and Macy Buso had 40 assists and seven blocks for Chap.

“Katie Dalton is always a rock star for us,” added West. “We want to get her the ball when we can. My libero (Vogel) sees what they are doing, does the right thing every time and makes a lot of plays for us.”

Junior Ania Swartzendruber led the Titans with 16 kills and also had 11 digs. Lilly Holmes led the team with 19 digs while Regan Kadel had 40 assists.

“It was a great match,” said Legend coach Travis Underwood. “The girls executed our game plan and we knew it would be a match of energy, runs and crazy plays. We walked out with heads high knowing we pushed the top team in the state to five sets. Playing Chap is always a great atmosphere and with it being later in the season gives a great chance to experience playoff volleyball.”
