Letter to the editor: Popular vote plan is empowering

No matter which candidate I decide to support, I want my vote to count when I cast my ballot for president. But because of the way the Electoral College system works, that's not the case. Electing our president based on a national popular vote would help make sure my vote and your vote counts the same as someone's from Florida or Wisconsin.

That's why I'm so excited that Colorado has the opportunity to vote Yes on Proposition 113, the National Popular Vote, this fall. It would change the way we elect our president from the current Electoral College system, which ignores the votes of tens of millions of Americans, to a new system where every single vote in every single state matters.

Our state is one of 15 states and D.C. that's already part of the National Popular Vote initiative — but now it's up to voters like us to approve that decision. Once enough states sign on across the country to get the magic number — 270 electoral votes — we get to finally elect our president the same way we elect every other candidate for office: One person always equals one vote, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins.

We can't stick with a system that throws out tens of millions of votes and often elects the presidential candidate who doesn't even get the most votes across the country, like in 2000 and 2016.

Let's make sure every Coloradan's voice and vote matters by voting yes on Proposition 113 this fall.
