How many contortions did Krista Kafer have to execute in order to twist the meaning about critical race theory in her Aug. 2 Denver Post column (“Kafer: Colorado students are being fed the poison fruits of Critical Race Theory”)? What audience is she catering to? People who don’t want their children to learn how racism exists and has existed for centuries throughout our country?
Contending that critical race theory is designed to shame and blame white students for racism is a specious claim. It does not deny equality and individuality. Rather it seeks to open the door to understanding and acknowledging racism in systems such as education, justice, housing, healthcare, employment, political power and other areas. It seeks to open the door for all to understand how generations of non-white people have been denied their rights and opportunities for growth that are still felt today.
From slavery to lynching to peonage to Black codes to redlining to literacy tests for voting to exclusion from the GI Bill and on and on. There was no generational wealth to be had. Equity recognizes this and allocates resources needed to reach an equal outcome.
The white defensive posturing assumed in this article is glaring and obscures the truth and preys on people’s fear. Will this be part of Ms. Kafer’s campaign as she is now running for public office in Littleton? Now that’s scary.
