I consider myself to be neither an alt-right conservative nor a bleeding-heart liberal; I am fairly mainstream. I don’t unquestioningly vote the party line, I vote *my* line, and I have a few criteria that help guide me in choosing my representatives in Congress. These are:
Where do they stand on the issues that are important to me? I pick my three top priority issues and spend time to learn where each candidate stands on those issues. I prefer the one that most closely shares my views. 
What is their track record with respect to those specific issues? If I want to know how they will represent my views in the future, I can look at how they have represented my views in the past.
How well do they represent their constituents? Do they truly have the best interests of their voters at stake, or are they unduly influenced by large contributors or organizations?
How well do they work in bipartisan deliberations? The concept of democracy is that both conservative and liberal views are important. Active collaboration and cooperation in both houses of congress validates this concept and keeps a healthy balance in legislation.
You may have other criteria to choose your candidate, but please, vote your conscience and your beliefs, not just the party-line.
