We in the (Weld County sheriff’s department) public affairs office just recently learned about this story and feel a long overdue thank you is owed to the managers of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Wheat Ridge - Denver West.
Back in June, one of our jail deputies, Lauren Ruvalcaba, volunteered to stand watch over Arvada Police officer Gordon Beesley after he was ambushed and killed while on duty in Olde Towne Arvada. Standing watch is something we do in the public safety sector whenever a first responder is killed in the line of duty, dies in an accident or otherwise passes away before their time. First responders take turns guarding the deceased 24 hours a day until they are laid to rest.
Lauren was assigned to a 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift. Rather than drive back home to Weld County in the middle of night, Lauren went to the Holiday Inn to rent a room after her shift. When the manager learned what she was doing in town, she comped Lauren’s room.
The kindness and generosity of this gesture can’t be overstated. Thank you, Felicia Romero, for taking care of our deputy and for showing your support to the peace officer profession.
