Councilmembers declare emergency amid crisis

Lone Tree City Council held its first virtual city council meeting March 17. With city staff, council and members of the public tuned into the same Microsoft Teams meeting, Lone Tree Mayor Jackie Millet led the meeting along with City Manager Seth Hoffman facilitating the conference and maintaining parliamentary procedure.

Council will hold virtual meetings as long as the COVID-19 outbreak lasts and until health experts lift bans on group meetings. The city closed all its facilities.

The first order of business was to pass a policy providing for virtual meetings in the event of an emergency. Council then approved a declaration of public health emergency related to COVID-19, which frees up emergency funds mandated by the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights and gives the mayor full authority to manage most administrative matters at the city. The city manager controls the emergency reserve fund and activates the city's emergency operations plan.

Council continued a public hearing for a second reading of an ordinance approving a metro districts chapter in the municipal code, as well as the public hearing for a brew pub license for Grist Brewing Co.

Council approved an award of contract for the Crooked Stick Traffic Signal and Widening Project, a $690,000 contract upgrading the intersection at RidgeGate Parkway.

Millet closed with a message for residents to be safe and mindful of each other's health.

“I would ask that as we go about the daily course of our business, we show kindness and compassion and some patience with each other,” Millet said. Millet thanked council, staff and the leadership team at the city for responding during a time of crisis. “I have the utmost confidence in the people we have assembled to deal with this.

“I would like to make one further plea to be supportive of our first responders as we see them out there, our public safety officers, the folks working in public works are all juggling their personal and professional lives to keep us all safe.”
