Leading efforts to save Bear Creek Lake Park and serving on the Morrison Board of Trustees keeps Katie Gill busy, but she's up for the challenge.

Gill has been on the Morrison Town Board since 2016, and was recently appointed as the mayor pro-tem. She is the founder and head of Save Bear Creek Lake Park, and uses her passion to serve the town of Morrison on a variety of issues.

She has been fighting to save the park from being flooded by the Army Corps of Engineers which hopes to store 20,000 acre feet of water in the lake that currently has 2,000 acre feet of water, in an attempt to help meet the state’s water needs. The group’s website provides information about the cause and ways to get involved.

Before she was on the board, members of the community urged Gill to run for trustee. She has spent 30 years living in town, and knows the people and issues.

“I did want to play a more active role in our community,” she said.

Gill recently retired from being a teacher in Jeffco Public Schools. In her teaching career, Gill taught English Language Arts, among many other subjects. Before she worked in Jeffco, she also spent time teaching in Gilpin County and Aztec, New Mexico.

When she’s not working to save the beauty of Colorado, Gill is usually out enjoying it. She likes to kayak, raft and backcountry ski all around the state and the US. She spends time in Morrison at the nearby parks, and hiking and biking on the trails around town.

“I like that it’s a walkable community,” she said.

As for goals for her work on the board, Gill has plenty. Like the rest of the members, she definitely wants to “Keep Morrison Morrison.”

“I really want to preserve the beauty of our valley and the small town quality of life,” she said. “I want to help make Morrison more sustainable and more resilient.”

Gill hopes to strengthen the relationship the town has with the new police department, and wants to make sure the officers feel welcome in Morrison.

“I want them to feel like they’re a part of our town,” she said.

As a board member, Gill aims to be a powerhouse who “does her homework.” She describes herself as detail oriented, knowledgeable about the town and willing to learn more about whatever she needs to.
