Northglenn appoints Megan Burns to city council

Posted

After a unanimous vote by the Northglenn City Council on March 22, Megan Burns is the new representative for Ward 1, replacing Ashley Witkovich.

Witkovich resigned in February for personal reasons.

According to her application, Burns works in marketing, which provides skills like “public speaking, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and reasoning,” she wrote.

She’s also a mother and bought a home in the city more than a year ago.

The top issues facing Northglenn, she wrote, include homelessness, crime and the cost of living. One solution she gave was to provide more affordable housing, which will impact all three issues.

At the study session on March 15, the city council interviewed all five candidates.

City Councilor Shannon Lukeman-Hiromasa asked what issues she sees in Ward 1. Burns said she’d like to see more community gathering places, like restaurants.

“I’d love to see more walkability, I’d love to see coffee shops, I’d love to see small businesses come to Northglenn,” she said.

City Councilor Jay Jaramillo asked where she sees more spending needed in the budget, and where the city spends too much.

Citing her experience as an East Coast native, she said she’d like to see more funding given to Public Works for snow removal. She doesn’t see any areas to decrease funding.

Lukeman-Hiromasa also asked how Burns addresses her own bias. Burns said that she tries to get as many perspectives as possible prior to making a decision.

Mayor Meredith Leighty asked her to complete this sentence: a city council member should…

“A city council member should care, about our community, about Northglenn, about its future, about its people,” she said.
