A Sept. 29 shooting in Lone Tree has resulted in one death and another person hospitalized, said Nate Jones, the communications director for the City of Lone Tree, in a written statement.  

According to the statement, at 4:12 a.m. on Sept. 29, the Lone Tree Police Department became aware of a potentially suicidal female, whose phone was last known to be in the area of the 8700 block of Park Meadows Drive.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office had requested Lone Tree officers conduct a welfare check in the area, Jones said. The 50-year-old female was from Fountain, a municipality in El Paso County. 

Lone Tree police officers located the vehicle registered to the female subject and made contact with it, according to the statement. Jones said the vehicle was located in the parking lot of the Word of Life Christian Center.

In the vehicle, officers discovered the woman and her 30-year-old son, who both showed injuries consistent with gunshot wounds, according to the statement. 

“Officers broke open the window, performed aid, and arranged for both individuals to be transported to the hospital,” Jones said in an email. “It is believed to be a domestic incident, and there is no threat to the community.”

The male subject died of his injuries at the hospital, according to the statement. The female has reportedly survived her injuries but is still hospitalized. 

A .22 caliber handgun was located in the vehicle, according to the statement. 

The Lone Tree Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their investigation of the incident, Jones said.
