Chris Cornn is fast on his feet and canny on positioning

Posted

Chris Cornn has learned this season to take advantage of his running speed on the soccer pitch.

Cornn, a senior captain and top scorer on the Ponderosa soccer team, has used his speed and hard work to develop into one of the top scorers in the Continental League by finishing on scoring chances this season.

He was involved in 19 of Ponderosa's 27 goals through the first 11 games this season.

“I do rely on my speed because of what my (Colorado Rapids) club coach taught me, to embrace my speed and how to use that more than just straight-up running,” said Cornn. “It's really all about positioning because I just can't stand there for a whole 90 minutes.

“Growing during the club season really helped me a lot. I got a lot of finishing reputation. It feels great to score a goal, probably the best feeling.”

Key stats

In 11 games played, Cornn had 11 goals and nine assists to lead the Continental League in points and was tied for the lead in goal scoring.

Coach's take:

`He's matured a lot in the last year. So he's been kind of a difference for us along with our goalie Cameron Klein. He's probably the fastest player I've ever coached. He's got great soccer skills. This year around the goal he is finishing.'

Jim Engels,

Ponderosa boys soccer coach

Lionel Messi. He's considered to be the greatest soccer player of all time and I look up to him.

My mom (Charlene) always wants me to work hard. She always comes to our games and cheers us on, no matter what.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

At least a goal and assist.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Physical education. I just like to be athletic.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

Mostly play video games and sometimes I go to the weight room and just lift.

What are your plans after high school?

I want to go to a four-year college and major in sports science. Yeah, I'd love to play soccer.

I put my right sock on, then my left sock, then my shin guards and my shoes. Then I put water on my cleats. I don't know why. It is just a ritual.

“Avengers: Endgame.” The way they do the movie is really nice.

How tough are a penalty kicks for the shooter?

They are really tough because it is a 50-50 chance. The goalkeeper has to dive the right way and you have to place it right. There is a lot of pressure. It seems really easy from about eighth yards out but sometimes it is a little difficult.
