Questions remain 10 days after fatal shooting of suspect by Douglas County deputies

As of Sept. 10, the identity of the suspect killed after shooting at Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies 10 days earlier had not been released.

On Twitter the day of the shooting, as county residents prepared for the long Labor Day weekend, the sheriff's office said the suspect had been pulled over for a traffic stop.

No reason for the Aug. 31 traffic stop or motive for the suspect's actions after that had been made public by Sept. 10. The coroner had not yet identified the suspect, a sheriff's office spokeswoman said. 

The only information on the incident came from a series of Twitter posts by the sheriff's office in the hours after the shooting. According to those tweets, here is what happened:

During a traffic stop at Delva Way and US Highway 85 in Sedalia the afternoon of Aug. 31, the suspect opened fire on deputies. Deputies returned fire, killing the suspect.

No deputies were injured, DCSO said in its first Twitter post on the incident at 4:34 p.m.

The highway remained closed in the area for hours after the shooting amid an investigation. It reopened shortly after 8 p.m.

No further information has been released. The  18th Judicial District Attorney's Office will investigate the incident, as it does with all officer-involved shootings in its jurisdiction, to determine if law enforcement was legally justified in using lethal force.
