The second driver in a police chase that ended with a crash that killed two young people was sentenced to three years in prison on Oct. 21.

Mario Jose, 25, fled from Douglas County deputies in a stolen Jeep in the early hours of Feb. 6, 2019. Deputies were also chasing a stolen Mitsubishi allegedly driven by 20-year-old Deanna Bixby.

The chase ended in tragedy when the Mitsubishi, traveling at up to 100 mph, crashed into a car at Mineral Avenue and Santa Fe Drive, killing Ryan Carter, 27, and Jayne Davicsin, 25.

The Jeep, which was not involved in the fatal crash, was found abandoned nearby, and Jose was arrested in Denver on Feb. 19.

Jose pleaded guilty to vehicular eluding, according to court records, and was sentenced to three years in prison on Oct. 21, with 245 days credit for time served. In exchange for a guilty plea, prosecutors dropped multiple charges: two counts of felony car theft, two counts of trespassing, violation of bail bond conditions and driving under restraint.

Jose is still facing charges from two unrelated incidents, according to court records. In one, he is charged with vehicular eluding, reckless endangerment and felony menacing. In another, he pleaded not guilty to a charge of felony drug possession.

Jose's criminal record includes guilty pleas to assault and car theft.

Bixby is awaiting trial in the Douglas County jail. She pleaded not guilty to a variety of charges, including vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding ending in death. Her case is scheduled for a jury trial in February.
