She has a winning spirit

Sierra Martinez has been captain of squad for two seasons

Posted

Sierra Martinez is a senior member of the Littleton High School spirit team.

She practices with the team every day at school and goes with the team to a studio one night a week to work on techniques.

She played on the junior varsity soccer team last spring and considers herself a hard-working athlete with the time she spends with the spirit team

“I do,” she emphasized. “Like any other sport, spirit is competitive with the practice and the stretching. It's not like football, soccer, baseball or anything. It doesn't have a ball. I believe that football, baseball, poms or anything people would consider a sport, you want to win.

“In poms, if you are competing, you want to get the first-place trophy. You want to hit a double turn or make sure you toes are pointing. In football you want to make a tackle or baseball you want hit a home run. So I do consider dancing a sport.”

Key stats

Martinez is a two-year captain of the Lionettes spirit squad team.

COACH'S TAKE:

"She is a great leader and one of our top performers. She is always looking out for others."

Sarah Kinney, Littleton spirit squad coach

Q&A with Martinez

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Poetry. I love poetry because I feel without you having to talk with someone, you are getting your emotions down, you really have communication. And poetry doesn't have to rhyme. When people think of poetry they think of rhyming and different sorts of stanzas but when you are writing down poetry you can always get your feelings out.

What do you like to do away from school?

I love to be with family. Going along with that, I love to go on hikes, go rafting, and in the wintertime like to go skiing and stuff like that outdoors.

What are your plans after high school?

I plan to go to Red Rocks Community College to get my basics for two years and then I would love to transfer to CSU.

What is your favorite song?

I love country music. It would probably be “Roller Coaster” by Luke Bryan. I love Luke Bryan, he's a really good artist.

What is your favorite movie?

“Selena.” She was more into music but she was really determined at a young age to become this person who spoke to the world through her music, going back and forth between English and Spanish

What is your favorite meal?

I love pizza. Just a regular pepperoni pizza with a side of ranch.

What is most difficult about competing in poms competition?

Memorizing a dance is the most difficult part. While you are dancing you have to remember all these different sorts of things, like to point your toes.
