I love Colorado.

I love having an escape to remoteness anytime I want — it’s only an hour’s drive to visit my parents at their home on five-and-a-half acres nestled in Colorado’s lovely mountains.

I also love the metro area in general, for each municipality’s individuality: the charm of Golden, the uniqueness of old Englewood, the history of Capitol Hill and the diversity of the Wash Park neighborhoods.

And I especially love the bragging rights of getting to call one of the coolest cities I know — Denver, of course — my stomping grounds, or my beat.

But something I don’t particularly love about this state is the snow — more specifically, the icy roads in the winter. I quite enjoy a wintertime snow when I get to stay in and cozy up with a cup of hot chocolate and just watch it fall. But driving in it is certainly not a top 10 reason for why I love Colorado so much.

It seems odd to be writing this column about winter weather during a nearly 100-degree June day. But a news release that was too cute to pass up inspired me.

Twenty new plows are joining the Colorado Department of Transportation’s fleet this year. While having these additional plows is newsworthy in itself, for me, the most interesting angle is that they are all named by Colorado children.

More than 1,100 names were entered in the inaugural Name That Plow Contest, and of them, a name for each new plow was chosen.

The winning names are: Abominable, Arctic King, Bigfoot, Blizzard, Cheese Ball, Darth Blader, Eisenplower, Fresh Plowder, Frosty, Jack Frost, Mr. Plow, Mr. Snowtastic, No-way Snow-day, Olaf, Plowzilla, Sno-way, Snow Crusher, Snowball, Snowtorious B.I.G. and Zebulon Ice.

Each plow’s name will be displayed on its door, so we’ll likely get to see which plow is keeping our individual neighborhood roads clear.

Maybe commuting this winter won’t be so bad. Surely, seeing a big, powerful machine called Snowball braving the storm will diminish a bit of the grumpiness I inevitably have each time I have to drive in inclement weather.

And, surely, there isn’t any storm that can overpower the all-mighty Plowzilla.
