South metro teams move on to state in volleyball

Champions were crowned in state volleyball regional tournaments on Nov. 8-9 and the winners advanced into the bracket for the state championships.

The state championships for all classes will be held Nov. 14-16 at the Denver Coliseum. A double-elimination bracket through the semifinals will be used in the state tournament, and all matches will be the best three of five sets.

In Class 5A, the regional champs who qualified for the state championships were Chaparral, Cherokee Trail, Legend, defending state champion Valor Christian, Broomfield, Rampart, Fort Collins, Grandview, Highlands Ranch, Ralston Valley, Mountain Vista and Cherry Creek.

In Class 3A, defending state champion Lutheran and SkyView Academy won their respective regionals and will be in the state championships.

Here are a few highlights from the regionals.

Senior Julianna Dalton and her sister, sophomore Katie Dalton, led Chaparral to victories over Denver East and Arapahoe in the Class 5A Region 1 tournament. Julianna had a total of 26 kills, while Katie had 21. Makenzie Rice had a total of 37 assists in the six sets, while Katie Dalton had 34.

Anna Davis and Caroline Reinkensmeyer led Valor to wins over Rocky Mountain and Rock Canyon in the Region 4 tourney. Davis had a total of 32 kills in eight sets, while Reinkensmeyer had 38 assists against Rocky Mountain and 46 in the match against Rock Canyon.

Katherine Von Kraut was named Cherry Creek’s player of the match with 16 kills in a win over Chatfield en route to the Region 12 title.

Grandview senior Nicole Yakushenok contributed 33 and 31 assists in wins over Fossil Ridge and Loveland, respectively, in the Region 8 tournament.

Senior Sydney Cole 18 digs and 38 assists in a Cherokee Trail win over ThunderRidge in Region 2 and had 39 assists against Doherty.

In wins over Lake County and Liberty Common in the Class 3A Region 1 tournament, junior Bella Vezzani had a total of 25 digs for unbeaten Lutheran.
