LAKEWOOD -- Skyview's Bahati Nabindu captured the state title in the girls 4A shotput June 25 at Jefferson County Stadium
Her top throw measured 36 feet 5 1/2 inches, which came on her final throw of the preliminary round. She beat Kylyn Ollivierre of Air Academy by more than a foot.
Nabindu, who is a senior, came into the tournament as the fourth seed. Her top throw during the regular season was 36-1 3/4. The top seed in the field, Northfield's Giovanna Meeks, did not start.
"Could not be more proud of this young lady," tweeted coach Chris Kemm. "To know her, and to see this is simply amazing."
Nabindu's teammate, Jennifer Jaramillo, finished 14th with a best throw of 30-3. Riverdale Ridge's Brooke Franke was third with a best throw of 34-11 3/4.
Frederick's 4-by-400-meter relay team (Garrett Colvin, Alexander Carrillo, Wyatt Schroth and Ryan Chacon) advanced to the June 26 finals by winning its preliminary heat. The time was 3:25.3. Finals are at 5:33 p.m. June 26.
