A suspect is dead, and two Arvada Police officers are on administrative leave after an officer-involved shooting transpired around 1 a.m. in the 5500 block of Newland Way on Jan. 12 following a reported auto theft.

Kenneth Delton Hutcheson, 38, of Brush, was pronounced dead at the scene after an altercation with APD officers, who were called to the area at around 1:18 a.m. in response to reports of a stolen Ford F-350 truck.

When officers arrived at the 5500 block of Newland Way and located the stolen truck, a suspect fled from the vehicle on foot. The vehicle had been reported stolen several days prior to the incident on Jan. 12.

Officers report that Hutcheson had a large knife and ran west from Newland Way on 56th Avenue. He then stopped and confronted officers while brandishing the knife and refused to drop the weapon. The officers fired on Hutcheson, killing him.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the details of the officer-involved shooting. The two involved officers are on leave, as is procedure in pending CIRT investigations.

Public records show that Hutcheson has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2004, including multiple felonies and prior auto theft charges.
