The Colorado State Patrol is searching for a vehicle involved in an early-morning Dec. 10 accident that occurred near Larkspur and left one man dead — although the search is purely for information, a spokesman said, and the agency is not pursuing charges against the driver.
The incident unfolded at approximately 4:14 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 25 when a 19-year-old man stepped into the far-right lane of traffic. He was first struck by a 2015 International box truck.
The man, of Aurora, landed in the far-left lane where the state patrol believes he was struck by a second vehicle. He was pronounced dead on scene. Authorities are not identifying the man until his next of kin are notified.
The second vehicle involved did not stop after hitting the 19-year-old.
Trooper Josh Lewis, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol, said it's likely the driver did not realize what they hit, but speaking to them is crucial to conducting a thorough investigation.
Lewis said investigators do not have a description of the vehicle they are seeking, but according to the state patrol's news release it may have minor damage.
As the investigation got underway, southbound lanes of I-25 were closed for approximately four hours, reopening shortly after 8 a.m.
It remains unclear why the man stepped into the lane of traffic.
Lewis said, “It is believed he intentionally stepped into the lanes of traffic” but when asked whether his death was accidental or potentially a suicide attempt, said they do not “speculate to any type of mindset.”
A vehicle was located nearby that was connected to the 19-year-old. Authorities do not know if it belonged to him or a relative.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash is asked to contact the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501 and reference case number 1C183745.
“We're just hoping somebody will come forward with information,” Lewis said. “We want to make sure we have that information for a complete investigation.”
