Arapahoe High School's boys tennis team learned a lot in its first match of the season, which was held Aug. 15 at Mullen High School in Denver.

The Warriors lost 5-1 to Mullen, a team with six returning players from its 2019 team that was a Class 4A state runner-up.

“It was a learning experience to play a team like Mullen,” said Arapahoe coach Peter Weyhrich. “Mullen is a tough team. It was good to be out and fun to have the team back again.

“We've got a lot on new guys on the team and this was our first match. We have a lot to work on, that's for sure. I was happy with the way our doubles teams competed. That was a positive.”

Arapahoe's No. 3 doubles team of Jack Terwilliger and Matthew Maloney notched the only win for the Warriors with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Mullen dominated the other matches.

The most competitive singles match was at No. 3 singles, where the Arapahoe Warriors' Tyler Rock dropped a 6-7, 4-6 decision to the Mullen Mustangs' Dante Dinovs.

“I thought I played pretty well but I have a lot of things to work on,” said Rock. “I have to work on my forehand. Our team is focusing on improving this season.”

Max Garside, Arapahoe's No. 1 singles players, got off to a slow start and never recovered as Mullen's Luc Caldwell recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

“It was awesome and good to be able to play with the virus spreading,” said Garside. “I'm just happy we have a season.

“I felt I played OK. I won a lot of points but I couldn't finish off the games. I love playing tough matches. It is so much better for improvement.”
