An 18th Judicial District judge has set the trial date for the former Highlands Ranch woman who was charged with her daughter’s 2017 death.

Kelly Turner, 42, pleaded not guilty to the charges related to her daughter’s death in a Dec. 16 arraignment. Her trial is now set for May 3-21.

Turner was arrested Oct. 18, 2019 and was charged with 13 counts, including murder, child abuse, theft and forgery, two years after her 7-year-old daughter, Olivia Gant, died. A grand jury indictment alleges Turner lied about her daughter's conditions, defied doctor's orders and convinced them to cease treatment on Olivia, leading to her death.

Turner said Olivia had multiple conditions, including seizures, malfunctioning intestines and constipation, according to the indictment. However, an autopsy later revealed that the child was not facing many of the conditions that Turner claimed.

Turner’s arraignment, which had been postponed several times, took place virtually. A Colorado Community Media request for expanded media coverage of the hearing was denied by Judge Patricia Herron.

The trial, which the defense and prosecution agree will be a lengthy process, is scheduled to take three weeks. The court plans to hear pre-trial motions on March 12.

Both sides’ legal counsel also agreed that the case will require a larger jury pool than other cases due in part to the media coverage of the case.
