Stargate School turns volleyball fortunes around

Stargate School wins this point, much to the delight of Morgan Stitzer (6), far right, Emma Herbolsheimer (5 ) and Maddie Lamar (7 ). The efforts of the Pumas' Libero, Tatiana Anderson (4) and Hayden Connors came up just short of keeping the point alive.

Stargate School’s girls' volleyball team is doing just fine this season.

Through play last week, the Eagles were 8-2, which included a four-set loss to Peak to Peak High School Sept. 30. Through 10 matches a year ago, Stargate was 5-5 and in the middle of a long losing streak.  Stargate won 11 of 25 matches during the season.

Coach Sam Hayward said her team is feeling pretty good at this stage of this season, and she’s not surprised.

“No. I walked in knowing what they were capable of,” she said. “They know, deep down, what they are capable of. I don’t think it’s a shock to anyone unless they didn’t believe in us to begin with. And that’s their loss.”

The Pumas turned back the Eagles 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 26-24 in Thornton. Cara Elliott led Peak to Peak with 11 kills. Rory West was next with nine. Middle blocker Alex Eschmeyer had three of her team’s five blocks at the net.

Senior Stephanie Millmore led Stargate with eight kills. Jocelyn Aguirre and Morgan Stitzer added six. Maddie Lamar served three aces.

The Pumas won the first set easily. The Eagles evened up matters in the second set, riding Millmore’s offense (three kills and an ace) and a key block from Aspen Miller. But Millmore was injured on the last play of the third set and had to be helped off the floor. She did not return for the fourth set.

Even so, the Eagles had a 24-21 lead in the fourth set, only to see the Pumas win the last five points of the match. Four of those points were off Hayden Connors’ serves

“It didn’t help that our senior captain and starter was injured and out,” Hayward said. “The girls did a really, really good job pushing through that. We had Ella Tempas step in and play an awesome game. She had four kills. She played really strong on the right set.”

The Eagles host Prospect Ridge Academy at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.

“We have some stuff to work on,” Hayward said. “They did a really good job overcoming the adversity in losing a captain – or losing anyone -- mid-game. They played their hardest. Sometimes, it doesn’t go your way. It doesn’t mean you didn’t work hard for it.”
